Can an Apple iPad be used to enter data?

back

We know of a few clients who are entering data onto ARM Rating Shells on an iPad, using either Numbers or Documents to Go to edit the Excel rating shell.

Here is the process with Numbers app:

  1. In ARM, push trial to Excel rating shell in the rating shell folder on PC.

  2. Drag Excel rating shell to Numbers app in iTunes on PC.

  3. Enter ratings into Numbers app on iPad.

  4. After reconnecting iPad to iTunes, then drag updated rating shell from iTunes to rating shell folder on PC.

  5. In ARM, pull Excel rating shell into trial.

GDM provides free support for step 1 and step 5 of this process only.

We do not plan to write an iPad or iPhone app. Our concerns are:

  • Longevity of the unit considering the typical researcher’s environment of "extreme" (for computers) hot or cold temperatures, dust, rain, and other "water/weather hazards".
  • Adequate screen readability in direct (and sometimes very hot) sunlight.
  • Screen life when using a rather delicate indoor quality device outdoors, especially for "dirty hands" assessments. (Rub mud or fine soil dust on a piece of clear plastic, then wipe off the mud/dust and notice all the grit scratches on the plastic.).
