Why should we use the newest study definitions?

back

GDM staff review and revise ARM study definitions regularly.  New features are added, entry fields are enhanced and new sections are sometimes included based on client requests.  Standard ARM study definitions are located in the ARMDef\GDMDef subdirectory.  The Study Definition directory or path set when ARM is first installed is C:\ARMDef\GDMDef.  The Study Definition path is changed when a study is opened that was defined with a different or older Study Definition (e.g. company-specific, PRM 4 or PRM 5 version Study Definition.)

We encourage you to use the new ARM Study Definitions to take advantage of the power and new features of ARM.

Selected improvements/changes in the newest ARM Study Definitions include:

  • Improved F5 user help which details each entry field for many of the study editors.  For example, in the plot data editor while using the G-All7 study definition, press F5 to display information about the current data entry field. This is a different help screen than if you press F1 to display the ARM help, which describes general plot data editor features.  F5 help describes what information to put into an entry field, while F1 help describes how to use program features.
  • Many repeating sections in the protocol and site descriptions display as grids.   For example, the application related sections (Application Information, Equipment Information, Pest Stage at Application, etc.) are based on a grid design; additional applications are inserted one at a time to the right (similar to a spreadsheet).  Click on the grid heading of a column-wise site description grid to mark the entire column as a block. Or click the right mouse button, and select Copy Current Repeating Section to copy the entire row or column. Spreadsheet information can also be easily copied and pasted into ARM site description grids.

G-All7, G-Seed7, and G-Gen7 study definitions  include:

  • Improved Protocol Descriptions and Site Descriptions with repeating sections and grids.
  • Nearly all long text fields (Objectives, Conclusions, Trial Initiation Comments, Field Prep/Maintenance, etc.) allow several pages of text to be entered.  Many also support rich text, supporting tables and font formatting.

ARM Tip: Press the Escape key or F11 (go back) or F12 keys (go forward) to exit grids. Also, when in a study editor such as the site description, messages are displayed such as "Press <Esc> to exit" in the lower left corner of the screen in the ARM message bar.

  • Enhanced validation lists that include complete Bayer Code, Common Name and Scientific name fields.  There is a master list which includes all Bayer codes in the master EPPO codes lists, and a personal list where you can store frequently selected crops or pests.

Hint: If you know the common name but not the Bayer Code, press F9 in the related field to display the validation list. With the Validation List displayed press the F9 key again to Search for a selected word in any validation list column, including comments.  There is also a “Filter For” command to search for information in a specific column.  Click the right mouse button anywhere in a column to search, then define a word or word fragment to display all validation list rows (records) including that term in the current column.  To display all records again, click the right mouse button and select Remove Filter.

ARM Tip: Some data entry fields include a “pick list” to which you can add special list items that will fill all entry fields within that section.  For example, in G-All7 site description there are pick lists for Study Director, Principal Investigator, Trial Location City, Cooperator, Soil Description Name, and Appl. Equipment.  To add to the validation pick list, complete all entry fields in the section. Return the cursor to the first field for that section and press F9.

Treatment Rate/Unit and Other Rate/Unit: ARM can automatically calculate the entry for an alternative rate field such as Other Rate when there is a change in the treatment rate, rate unit, or other rate unit field. This feature allows the standard rate and unit fields to be expressed in metric rates while the other rate and units are in US units. The standard rate and unit fields can also be expressed as active ingredient while the other rate and units are in product units. Press F5 to display the user help when in the Treatment editor to display more information about added treatment fields.

Cost/Unit: The new Cost and Cost Unit fields are used to identify treatment cost and monetary unit (e.g. pounds, dollars, etc.) They may also be used in transformation formulas for calculations such as gross margin.
